November 2013, New York, NY – Kiehl’s Since 1851 presents its latest innovation, Ultra Facial Cream
Intense Hydration for drier skin types, a revolutionary extra lightweight formula, with proven results in just one week. Drawing upon over 160 years of skin hydration expertise, Kiehl’s chemists have developed a paradoxical new formula architecture, specifically for drier skin types, that imparts deep hydration in a surprisingly lightweight architecture.

This new formulation provides improved 24 hour hydration and leaves skin looking visibly smoother. Instrumental results showed significant improvement in skin hydration and skin barrier protection in
100% of subjects. Clinical results demonstrated significant improvements on visible skin dryness in just 7 days.

Kiehl’s nourishes drier skin customers – a large, yet underserved population Dry and very dry skin types comprise a large part of the world’s population: 33% in the United States, 32% in Korea, and 21% in Europe.

1 combination skin: dry and very dry skin can feel itchy and tight, and look flaky or prematurely aged. “Very dry skin, sometimes called xeroderma or asteatosis, is a common skin condition. It is characterized by a lack of the appropriate amount of water and lipids retained in the superficial layers of the skin. Skin suffering from dehydration struggles to preserve optimal moisture reserves. What very dry skin needs is not simply any old heavy moisturizer – it needs an effective one that penetrates well and integrates into the stratum corneum to deliver moisture continuously throughout the day and night. Many products on the market are thick and occlusive and, even to those with the driest skin, can feel and look greasy, yet thy hydration they provide is limited and still requires reapplication throughout the day” shares Dr. Adam Geyer, Kiehl’s Consulting Dermatologist. “What excites me most about this product is that it gives my patients and Kiehl’s customers with dry skin a solution — to moisturize intelligently and elegantly, not just to moisturize more.”

These customers experience more intense symptoms than normal or Kiehl’s hydration innovation: The efficacy and power of a boulder, the weight of a cloud. Unlike heavy creams available on the market to treat dry skin types, Ultra Facial Cream Intense Hydration does not use traditional thickeners such as waxes or butters that can feel heavy on the skin. Instead, it employs a lightweight cream foundation to impart a moisturizing yet weightless feel to the skin.

The chemists at Kiehl’s focused on a key ingredient, Enriched Hyaluronic Acid, a co-encapsulation of two hydrating molecules that work to complement each other and provide powerful, multi-action hydration benefits. This co-encapsulation is designed to “break” upon application to skin to deliver concentrated hydration pockets, providing immediate moisture that leaves skin hydrated for 24 hours. The result is an increase in the skin’s ability to capture moisture in the outermost layer of the epidermis, “filling the cracks” of dry skin.

“Kiehl’s innovative ingredient selection and formulation is paving a new path for skin care solutions. Today, advancements from the Kiehl’s labs allow us to bring to market formulas that deliver complete solutions for skincare issues, while ensuring a more aesthetic experience,” shares Dr. Geoff Genesky, 1 L’Oreal Korea Skincare Usage & Attitude Report 2009, L’Oreal USA Skincare Segmentation Study 2010, Ispsos Luxury Users in Europe Usage & Attitude Report 2008 head of Kiehl’s Skin Care Laboratory, Research And Innovation Manager “I compare thetechnology in this product to today’s high tech sports fabrics. 60 years ago, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay ascended Mount Everest carrying with them close to 44 pounds (20kg) each.2 Explorers making that same climb today would only need to carry half of that weight thanks to lighter high-tech fabrics and technology that offers support benefits without excess weight. We are pleased that with this skincare innovation, customers suffering from dry skin no longer have to compromise with respect to aesthetic experience.”

Double Torture Tested:
Clinically testing in one of the world’s extreme climates with extreme users. To conduct a real-life evaluation, the chemists at Kiehl’s “torture tested” the new Ultra Facial Cream  Intense Hydration under two extreme conditions – extreme heat and on very dry skins. The first: in Phoenix, Arizona.

Kiehl’s specifically tested the formula in Phoenix, a city known for its extremely dry, hot climate. It currently ranks as the hottest city in the USA and among the top 10 hottest regions in the world. More than 100 days per year see temperatures above 99°F and low humidity levels 92% of the year. 3 The second: with frequent swimmers. Kiehl’s specifically tested the formula on frequent swimmers. Due to regular exposure to chlorinated water, swimmers are constantly washing away the natural oils that coat the outer layer of the skin, which can lead to visible dryness and lack of moisture on skin. Even those with normal skin types are known
to exhibit symptoms of extremely dry skin.45 In the instrumental test6 The formula was proven to provide 24 hours of skin hydration o 100% of subjects showed significant improvement in skin hydration  100% of subjects showed significant improvement in skin barrier protection.

8 40 females, age 18-65 with dry skin type, regular swimmers (at least 3 times/week, at least 30 minutes each time with face submerged in water during their swim).  among all test subjects:
8.68% of subjects showed immediate skin dryness reduction
o 56% of subjects showed immediate improvement of overall skin quality
o 97% of subjects showed a reduction in visible skin dryness by 30% in just 7 days

Key Ingredients

Clinically proven to improve skin hydration by 30% in 1 week Kiehl’s chemists selected a potent combination of powerful skin hydrating ingredients and infused them into an advanced, feather-weight cream architecture to create Ultra Facial Cream Intense Hydration. Enriched Hyaluronic Acid is a co-encapsulation of two complementary hydrating molecules:

1) Hyaluronic Acid: This ingredient can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water and is a highly effective humectant that draws in moisture to keep skin hydrated.
2) Biomimetic Hydrator: This biocompatible structure, similar to the structure of the phospholipids found in the human cellular membranes, helps seal in moisture. This hydrating ingredient is also known to be used in the medical world in soft eye lens technology to keep lenses hydrated, even in low humidity conditions. With Enriched Hyaluronic Acid, the formula helps to increase water capture in the outermost layer of the epidermis to help “fill in the cracks” where symptoms of dry skin are most visible.

Refined Apricot Oil, an ingredient highly compatible with skin, is a refined fruit oil that contains Omegas 3, 6, and 9 as well as essential fatty acids. The formula, with Refined Apricot Oil, helps condition and soften the skin to reduce visible dryness and flakiness.
